Eau Claire's Redevelopment Authority has agreed to give the US Postal Service one more month to move out of the North Barstow post office, but at a price.
Postal officials were asking for a 2 month delay, to give them more time to prepare the new location in the former Charly's Market on East Madison Street. An earlier 6-month extension request was denied by the RDA, citing the need to start preparing for a planned downtown parking ramp. Eau Claire Economic Development Director Mike Schatz says the RDA board Friday morning offered a compromise - a 30 day lease extension at double the rent - 10,000 dollars. There would also be a 3,000 dollar-per-day penalty for staying beyond October 31st. Schatz says delaying the move longer would add an estimated 390,000 to 600,000 dollars to the cost of the ramp, which is estimated at around 10 million dollars. Schatz says the increase would be due to the higher cost of building in the winter, the higher bids typically received during the busy summer season, and inflation. The parking ramp is in the basic design stage and still needs final approval from the city council.
