Alex and I had our first EVER "Meet Your Neighbors Friday," and we had such a blast!
On our way to the first city on our list, Elmwood, we saw beautiful landscapes. Rolling hills, cornfields, and pristine farms. (I counted on the way there, and Alex asked, "Are we there yet?" a total of four times.) We got to Elmwood, home of UFO Days, parked the WAXX vehicle, and then started to walk around downtown. In the middle of the "downtown," there is a huge intersection and as we were exploring, Alex decided to just walk right in the middle of the road. I started scolding him and he said, "Who cares, this is a small town, we're fine walking in the middle of the road..." Just then a truck came barreling out and almost hit Alex. I, of course, will take credit for saving his life! While in Elmwood, we took some photos with various UFO and alien signs and objects, and then made our way into Sailer's Meats. We talked to the store clerk who gave us a bit of history on the business and the building, and Alex even bought some chicken to take home for dinner!
After Elmwood, we headed to Downsville. We had a lot of requests to eat lunch at Tilli's, so we did just that. It is a small grocery store and restaurant, with food just like mom makes! The small town atmosphere makes you feel like you're family, and what was really cool was that they were playing WAXX on their radio!
On our way out of Downsville we hit up Irvington. Irvington is positioned beautifully on the Red Cedar River, with a place to hop on the Red Cedar Trail or to start tubing. We took a few photos, enjoyed the view, and then were on our merry way!
Our first stop in Menomonie was the Dunn County Fair! (Of course this being my hometown, I was excited to show off to Alex.) At the fair we looked around a little bit and decided that we wanted to check out the animals. We went into the cow barn where I had to explain to Alex the difference between dairy cattle and beef cattle. We also went and saw some llamas, goats, and pigs. Every animal that Alex went up to was sacred of him, so we decided we should try the petting zoo where the animals are used to being touched. There were pigeons, ducks, peacocks, alpacas, donkeys, and a rabbit. (Alex thought we should buy an animal to take home as a souvenir, and time after time I had to reassure him that it wasn't a good idea.) At one point Alex bought some feed for the goats and then said, "owww it pinches!" as they were eating it out of his hand. I laughed the whole time! On our way out we had to get my favorite fair food, kettle corn, and I think I even got Alex on board because he upped the ante by getting an even bigger bag than me!
After the fair we stopped at a Menomonie landmark, the UW-Stout clock-tower. We took a photo and then wandered campus to find Alex a bathroom. (Finding bathrooms for Alex was a constant agenda on our trip. Which is normally more typical of me...) On our way out of town we also stopped at a race car shop to see how cars are put together and we had the chance to get behind the scenes of this popular past time.
All in all, we had a very successful and exciting first ever "Meet Your Neighbors Friday"!! It was so much fun to meet the people in these towns and to discover the local hot spots. I can't wait for our next adventure!
